Sustainability

Recycling contributes to intelligent exploitation of limited resources such as forestry, mining, oil, clean air, clean water and energy. The activity is therefore an important cog in the development toward a sustainable society.

Since 1992 - many years before the WEEE directive was introduced - Stena has been recycling electronic waste. Today, Stena is a leading electronic recycling company with unique skills and its own 19 facilities in ten European countries. We also work on the basis of a Code of Conduct.

Stena cooperates with a number of partners such as customers, universities and authorities to constantly develop our solutions. With innovative customer solutions and R&D, we drive recycling forwards. All in order to recycle more materials from discarded complex electronics products - and to prevent freons, brominated plastics and other environmentally hazardous substances and materials from being spread into the environment.

Some milestones over recent years are unique methods for recycling LCD-screens and sorting of brominated plastics in electronic waste.

Each year our electronic recycling contributes to avoiding carbon dioxide emission of over 1.3 million tonnes. This is the equivalent of 200,000 round-the-world flights. This is the amount by which emissions would have increased if the material had not been recycled, but had been replaced with raw materials from new, virgin material.

Our thanks to customers, authorities, employees and the public for great cooperation in the service of recycling.
